Cougars Defeat Bakersfield in 13 Innings, 5-4

Senior Dane Mehring posted eight strikeouts in seven innings of relief in CSU's 5-4 win over Bakersfield

CHICAGO – The Chicago State baseball team twice came back from two-run deficits to defeat visiting Bakersfield by a score of 5-4 Thursday evening at Cougar Stadium in the opening game of its final Western Athletic Conference series of the season.

CSUB opened the scoring in the second inning by capturing an early 2-0 lead that included an RBI single from Jordie Hein.

The Green and White would score a pair of runs in the third inning to even the score at 2-2. Senior Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) and freshman Cody Freund (McHenry, IL/McHenry) both singled on consecutive plays to open the stanza. Patterson later scored on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Chase Matheson (McHenry, IL/McHenry) and Freund crossed home plate via a wild pitch.

In the seventh inning, David Metzgar hit a leadoff triple to left center and scored on Max Carter's RBI sacrifice fly to center field that gave the visitors a 3-2 lead. The Roadrunners added another run in the top of the eighth to increase their lead at 4-2 when Logan Trowbridge reached base with a single and later scored on a CSU throwing error.

Chicago State then rallied to score a pair of runs in the ninth to tie the score at 4-4 and send the game into extra innings. Senior Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring a RBI sacrifice bunt by fellow senior Evan Davis (Sterling, IL/Sterling). Freund then hit an RBI single to bring home senior Quentin Alexander from third base with the tying run.

After three scoreless innings, the Cougars came back in the bottom of the 13th when junior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake IL/Central) reached base on a fielder's choice and scored the winning run on a CSUB throwing error to end the game.

Davis, Freund and senior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) each recorded two hits to lead the Green and White on offense.

Senior Jerry Silva (Chicago, IL/Holy Trinity) threw a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts in the 13th to earn the victory. Fellow senior Dane Mehring (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) recorded eight strikeouts in seven innings of relief.

CSU is back in action on Friday afternoon with the second game of this weekend's series with Bakersfield beginning at 3 p.m.
