Baseball Splits WAC Home Doubleheader with New Mexico State

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball earned a split in its Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with New Mexico State today at Cougar Stadium. The Aggies captured the first game by an 8-4 margin before the host Cougars closed out the series with a 6-1 win. CSU improved its record to 11-30-1 with the split, while NMSU saw its record move to 7-31-1.

Game 1 – New Mexico State 8, Chicago State 4
The game was scoreless through the first two-plus innings until the Cougars scored twice in the third inning to gain a 2-0 lead. Senior Quentin Alexander scoring on an RBI sacrifice fly from fellow senior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame), and senior Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) then scored on the next play after an Aggie throwing error.

New Mexico State came back in the fourth inning with four runs to capture the lead at 4-2, highlighted by a two-run single by Kyle Graf. The visitors added two more runs in the sixth and eighth innings to increase its leading margin to six at 8-2.

CSU came back with a pair of runs in the ninth for the final margin with Patterson scoring senior Matt Schmidt (Dundee, IL/Jacobs) from third with an RBI sacrifice fly and freshman Cody Freund (McHenry, IL/McHenry) hitting an RBI single to score senior Chris Hipchen (Geneva, IL).

Schmidt went 3-for-4 at the plate and Hipchen hit 2-of-3 to lead CSU's offense. Senior Jake Perkins (Huntley, IL/Huntley) took the loss despite recording seven strikeouts, but allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits in six innings of work. Senior Jerry Silva (Chicago, IL/Holy Trinity) posted a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Game 2 – Chicago State 6, New Mexico State 1
The Aggies gained a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Brent Hermanussen led off with a double and scored on an RBI groundout from Lucas Martinez, but Romanin hit an RBI single in the fourth inning that brought home Patterson to tie the score at 1-1.

In the fifth inning, the Cougars added three additional runs behind a two-RBI single from Romanin and an RBI single from Patterson.

A solo home run by senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake IL/Central) and an RBI bunt single from fellow senior Evan Davis (Sterling, IL/Sterling) in the sixth inning provided CSU's final two runs.

Romanin ended the game with a 3-for-4 and drove home three runs for the Green and White, and Patterson and Schmidt each hit 2-for-4. Senior Tyler Abbott (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) went the distance for his first complete game win of the season after recording a career-best 12 strikeouts while allowing a run on two hits.

The Cougars open a two-game road swing on Tuesday afternoon at Valparaiso with a start time of 3 p.m., central time.
