Box Score
CHICAGO – The Chicago State baseball team used the long ball to the fullest at Cougar Stadium in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference contest against Roosevelt University. CSU blasted a season-best six home runs, including a career-best three bombs from senior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame), to defeat the visiting Lakers by a 17-6 margin.

The Cougars jumped ahead with a 2-0 lead in the first inning that started when senior Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) led off with a single and stole second before scoring on senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake IL/Central)'s RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Senior Matt Schmidt (Dundee, IL/Jacobs) later hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield that scored Romanin, who reached base on a walk.

CSU increased its lead to 6-0 in the second inning thanks to Romanin's first homer of the day, a grand slam that went 360 feet into left field. Six more runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning hiked the Green and White's advantage to 12-0 that was highlighted junior Chris Hipchen (Geneva, IL) hitting his first career grand slam, while Romanin and senior Chase Matheson (McHenry, IL/McHenry) added solo home runs.

After the home team added two runs in the fifth to take a 14-0 lead, Roosevelt scored its first run of the game in the top of the sixth when Jon Knies lined an RBI double that scored Alex Neufeld. Romanin struck again in the bottom of the sixth with an inside-the-park home run that also scored fellow senior Quentin Alexander for a commanding 16-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Charley Zeschke hit a two-run homer to pull the Lakers within 16-3, but sophomore Sanford Hunt (Chicago, IL/Kenwood) hit a solo home run of his own, his second of the season, to bring CSU's lead back to 17-3.

Roosevelt scored three runs in the eighth inning to provide the final margin.

Romanin finished the day hitting a perfect 3-for-3 that included career highs of seven runs batted in and four runs scored, while Hipchen batted 3-of-4 with four RBI and scored twice. Hunt, Matheson, Schmidt and Patterson each tallied two hits for CSU.

Graduate student Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) allowed three runs on four hits in seven strong innings to earn his first win of the season while walking three and striking out two. Senior Jerry Silva (Chicago, IL/Holy Trinity) threw a scoreless inning and allowed a hit in the ninth inning.

The Cougars travel to Notre Dame for a midweek game tomorrow evening with a start time of 6:05 p.m., Eastern Time.
