PDF Box ScoreLAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Cougars tied a season-high with 14 runs on Thursday (May 15) evening at Presley Askew Field in a 14-7 Western Athletic Conference victory over New Mexico State.
Sometimes all it takes is one big inning and the Cougars had their biggest inning of the season on Thursday evening. Chicago State responded from a New Mexico State three-run second inning with a nine-run third. The Cougars sent 14 men to the plate and recorded seven hits with senior
Nathan Poff (Sellersburg, Ind./New Albany)'s RBI double accounting for the only extra base hit of the frame. Chicago State also benefited from three walks and a hit by pitch. Nine of the first 10 hitters in the inning reached base and they all scored.
It was Chicago State's first nine run inning since May 13, 2012 when the Cougars scored nine times in the fifth inning of a 12-2 victory over NJIT.

Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) recorded a career-high four hits and three runs scored. Freshman
Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) totaled three hits, two runs and an RBI. Junior
Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), junior
Matt Schmidt (Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) and Poff each knocked in two runs.
New Mexico State starter Robert Kraft went 2.1 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits. Chicago State starter
Nick Kostalek (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits over 7.0 innings. His record is now 4-2. Kraft falls to 2-4.
The Cougars improve to 16-35 (4-18 WAC) with the victory. New Mexico State falls to 19-28 (10-12 WAC). The two clubs will play again on Friday with first pitch set for 7 p.m. CT.
