PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A sparkling pitching performance by junior starter Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) helped Chicago State baseball to an 8-1 win over Lehigh on Saturday (March 1). The win gave Chicago State a 3-1 record at the Snowbird Classic this week.

Wellwerts didn't allow a run on eight hits over 6.1 innings. He walked just one batter and struck out five. Wellwerts is now 1-2 on the season. Lehigh starter Nick Stephens is 1-1 on the year after giving up four runs in five innings.

The Cougars were already up 1-0 when they put three on the board in the fifth. Junior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame)'s two-RBI double was followed by a single by junior Chase Matheson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) to score Romanin. Matheson drove in another run in the seventh and then scored later in the inning to make the score 6-0.

It was more than enough support for Wellwerts. Senior Jerry Silva (Chicago, Ill./Holy Trinity) (1.2 innings) and junior Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) (1.0 inning) finished out the game on the mound.

Five Cougars finished with two hits each. Romanin and Matheson each had two RBI. Romanin and junior Evan Davis (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) each scored twice.

"Andy set the tone for us today," Chicago State head coach Steve Joslyn said. "He was one of three pitchers for us to throw the ball well. Offensively we benefited from timely hits to open up the game."

The Cougars improve to 4-6. Lehigh is now 1-3. Chicago State returns to the field on Friday (March 7) at Northwestern State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
