CHICAGO – Chicago State University senior volleyball player Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) was recently selected by the Great West Conference as a recipient of the league's 2011-12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) Sportsmanship Award along with University of North Dakota track and field athlete Matt Rose.
A native of Harare, Zimbabwe, Maziveyi concluded her collegiate career last fall by finishing second on the team and 10th in the GWC in kills with an average of 2.26 per set, and was named Academic All-GWC for the third time. Her demeanor on the court is described as positive even through adversity. She also received CSU's Athletic Director's Honor Roll accolades for the fourth consecutive year, named to the Dean's List and was recently accepted to medical school at LSU. Maziveyi has also been named a Presidential Scholar in addition to serving as the treasurer of the Alpha Epsilon Delta National Honor Society and an inductee into the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society.
Maziveyi organizes all service projects for CSU volleyball and has visited her native homeland to deliver supplies and present health and empowerment seminars to students. She is a leader on and off the court and exhibits character and sportsmanship by example. Her career goals include being involved in cancer research, and her vision to find a cure for cancer is equal to her devotion to encouraging children living in poverty.
The SAAC Sportsmanship Award was established as an initiative to assist in promoting the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the Conference. The award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each academic year who display the best sporting behavior or generally conduct him/herself with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship. The recipients are selected by student-athletes who serve on the SAAC committees at the GWC member institutions.
