CHICAGO – The Chicago State University men's track & field team closed out the indoor portion of its 2012 schedule on a high note after capturing fourth place in the fourth-annual Great West Conference Indoor Championships at the Westwood Sports and Fitness Complex in Sterling, Ill.
The Green and White tallied 81 points for its highest point total in the annual championship meet since joining the conference in 2008 and produced blank top-ten finishes.
Senior Daniel Fleming (South Holland, IL/Thornwood) (South Holland, Ill.) and sophomore Kelvin White (St. Petersburg, FL/Lakewood) (St. Petersburg, Fla.) each captured multiple medals to lead the way for CSU over the weekend.
Fleming posted a second-place finish in the long jump thanks to a leap of 22-5 in addition to earning a pair of third-place showings in the high jump (6-4.25) and the triple jump (44-5.50).
White, the 2011 GWC Newcomer of the Year, received the Best Outstanding Performance of the Championship award when he broke his own CSU and GWC indoor records in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.04 in the finals to eclipse his previous time by 12-tenths of a second. White also claimed third place in the long jump after producing a mark of 22-3.50.
Seniors Jamal Ephraim (Hazel Crest, IL/Lincoln College) (Hazel Crest, Ill.) and Uri Kuyoro (Harvey, Ill.) also gained a pair of top-five finishes in the sprinting events. Ephraim placed second in the 200-meter dash (22.57) and fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.09), while Kuyoro placed fourth in the 200 (22.85) and the 400 (50.61).
Senior Jershawn Dubose (Chicago, Ill.) placed fourth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.43 after winning his prelim heat at a time of 8.49, while senior Robert Holmes (Chicago, IL/Leo) (Chicago, Ill.) finished sixth in the shot put (45-7.75) and seventh in the weight throw event (45-9.25).
The 4x400-meter relay team of White, Fleming, Kuyoro and sophomore Jeremy Anderson (Springfield, IL/Lanphier) (Springfield, Ill.) captured fourth place with a time of 3:28.33.
