CSU Winter/Spring Academic All-Great West Honorees

CHICAGO –
Chicago State University was honored by the Great West Conference today for its dedication and commitment to success in the classroom after placing 15 of its student-athletes on the league's Winter/Spring Academic All-Conference list, the conference announced in a press release.

CSU was represented in the following sports: baseball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track, women's basketball, women's golf and women's tennis. The GWC honored 240 student-athletes from the conference's seven core members in addition to associate members Seattle (indoor/outdoor Track), NYIT (baseball) and Northern Colorado (baseball).

The criteria to gain the conference's academic honor are a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and compete in at least 50 percent of his/her respective team's contests. The honorees are selected by each school's Sports Information Director with approval from the Faculty Athletic Representative and the head coach from each sport recognized. First-year students, freshmen and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Women's Tennis provided the most academic all-conference selections for CSU with all five team members being honored, while juniors Peggy Moore (Toledo, Ohio) and Xavier Williams (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Joseph Hill, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) were recognized as dual honorees.

Moore garnered honors in women's tennis and women's indoor track and field, while Hill and Williams captured accolades in men's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, Moore and Williams were two of seven student-athletes who are repeat selections to the team from last year.

The 240 winter and spring sport student-athletes join the 171 fall sports student-athletes who earned Academic All-Conference honors bringing the total number to 411 who excelled in the classroom and were honored for their efforts. CSU had five student-athletes claim Academic-All GWC honors in the fall.

"There is no question that we have quality student-athletes in the Great West," said GWC Commissioner Ed Grom. "I am amazed that there are more than 400 individuals who combine competing at the highest level of NCAA competition with succeeding in the classroom, which is the cornerstone of the NCAA.

"The drive and determination of our Great West student-athletes today, with so many distractions and other options at their fingertips, is very inspiring. I am proud of our academic all-conference honorees who are all winners in sport and life."
