CHICAGO – Chicago State men’s track and field closed the inaugural Great West Conference Outdoor Championships on a good note Saturday at Rice University’s Track Stadium in Houston. The Cougars recorded 11 top-ten finishes on the final day of competition to produce 61 points, good for a fifth-place showing following the three-day meet.
Leading the Cougars in the running event finals was freshman Uri Kuyoro (Harvey, Ill.), who set another personal record with a time of 48.45 en route to claiming the 400-meter dash title. Kuyoro’s time also set a new conference record and broke the school’s 400m record that was set seven years ago by Kempes Chambers (48.56). Sophomore Earnest Jones (Chicago, Ill.) placed seventh in the race with a time of 50.71.
Freshman Jershawn Dubose (Chicago, Ill.) captured third place in the 110-meter hurdles when he ran a personal-best time of 15.73. Junior Josh Campbell (Cartersville, Ga.) posted a fifth-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles thanks to running a time of 57.83.
Capturing three individual top-ten finishes on the day for CSU was freshman Jonathan Majors (Richton Park, Ill.). Majors began the day with a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 45-07.25 before recording a pair of seventh-place showings in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes thanks to posting times of 11.46 and 22.65.
In the high jump, senior Derrick Smith (Hazel Crest, Ill.) finished fifth with a jump of 6-04 and sophomore Daniel Fleming (South Holland, Ill.) posted a leap of 6-0.75 for a 10th-place finish.
Sophomore Robert Holmes (Chicago, Ill.) placed 11th in the discus throw with a mark of 124-0, while fellow classmate Xavier Williams (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a personal-best throw of 97-10.
The 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Fleming, Kuyoro, Majors and sophomore Jerrel Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) posted a season-best time of 42.57 for a fourth-place finish.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Jones, Campbell, Fleming and Kuyoro teamed up to capture third place with a season-best time of 3:19.72 to finish the meet.
