CHICAGO – Sophomore Chennelle Martin (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis HS) (Indianapolis, Ind.) won her first-ever conference individual title Saturday afternoon in helping Chicago State women's track and field finish sixth after the final day of the inaugural Great West Conference Outdoor Championships at the Rice University Track Stadium in Houston.
CSU closed the meet with a total of 20 points to finish ahead of NJIT and earned four top ten finishes during the three-day competition.
Martin edged South Dakota's Amber Hegge after recording a leap of 5-06.50 in her first jump at the mark. Both jumpers attempted to make a higher mark, but Hegge missed the opportunity after three tries giving Martin the title.
The 4x100-meter relay team of seniors Nicole McFadden (Chicago, IL/East-West University) (Chicago, Ill.) and Bonita Jones (Sacramento, CA/American River College) (Sacramento, Calif.), sophomore Keshuna Franklin (Chicago, IL/Prosser Career Academy) (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Neshia Robertson (South Holland, IL/Thornwood) (South Holland, Ill.) performed well on their timely handoffs to claim fourth place after producing a season-best time of 48.75.
Junior Jasmine Allen (Evergreen Park, Ill.) tallied a season-best time of 3:00.03 in the 800-meter dash to conclude the Cougars' individual event tally.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Franklin, Martin, Robertson and freshman Lanesha Sutton (Lansing, IL/Thornwood) (Lansing, Ill.) posted a time of 4:24.59 for a seventh-place finish to conclude the meet.
