Second Day Results
HOUSTON – Chicago State men’s track and field finished the second day of competition on a good note Friday at the inaugural Great West Conference Outdoor Championships, held at the Rice University Track Stadium in Houston. The Cougars are currently seventh with 14 points entering the meet’s final day of events.
In the decathlon, sophomore Daniel Fleming (South Holland, Ill.) placed second with a two-day total of 5,632 points. Fleming captured his third event of the competition after winning the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:21.14 following his wins in the long jump and high jump events on Thursday.
Fleming continued his stride into the field events as he finished third in the long jump after producing a leap of 23-0.50 and also earned a 10th-place showing in the javelin throw thanks to a mark of 137-06.
CSU made its mark in the sprinting event prelims as it qualified six runners in five events. Freshman Jonathan Majors (Richton Park, Ill.) and sophomore Jerrel Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) qualified for the 100-meter dash finals after posting times of 11.08 and 11.21 to finish fourth and eighth, respectively. Majors also placed himself in the 200-meter dash finals by producing a personal-best time of 22.46
In the 400-meter dash, freshman Uri Kuyoro (Harvey, Ill.) posted the top time in the prelims after running for a personal record with a time of 49.08. Joining Kuyoro in the finals is sophomore Earnest Jones (Chicago, Ill.), who recorded a time of 50.00 to finish seventh.
Freshman Jershawn Dubose (Chicago, Ill.) produced a personal-best time of 15.79 to place third in the 110-meter hurdles and qualify for today’s final, while junior Josh Campbell (Cartersville, Ga.) earned a spot in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing eighth in the prelims with a time of 1:00.20.
Junior Joseph Leyendecker (Richton Park, Ill.) posted a 10th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after recording a time of 11:49.98.
CSU heads into today’s final day from Houston with the field event finals beginning at 3 p.m., while the running event finals will start around 5 p.m.
