CHICAGO – Chicago State men’s and women’s track & field teams travel to Houston this week to compete in the inaugural Great West Conference Outdoor Championships at the Rice University Track Stadium beginning tomorrow morning with the heptathlon and decathlon events at 9 a.m.
In addition to the Cougars, other teams competing in the three-day meet are host Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley.
Freshmen Lanesha Sutton (Lansing, Ill.) and Neshia Robertson (South Holland, Ill.) will begin the meet in the heptathlon for the women, while sophomore Daniel Fleming (South Holland, Ill.) will compete in the decathlon for the men.
Later in the day, sophomore thrower Robert Holmes (Chicago, Ill.) will compete in the men’s hammer throw which begins at 6 p.m., to conclude the first day.
The second day of the meet starts Friday at 9 a.m. with the finals of the heptathlon/decathlon events followed by the field events at 4 p.m. and the running events at 5:30 p.m. Saturday concludes with the field event finals beginning at 4:30 p.m., while the running event finals start at 6 p.m.
During the conference’s indoor championship meet in March at South Dakota, the men’s team placed sixth and the women’s team finished seventh while combining to earn seven top ten finishes which included senior Derrick Smith’s (Hazel Crest, Ill.) high jump title and Fleming’s second-place finish in the heptathlon.
