GREEN BAY, Wis. – Three players scored in double figures as host Green Bay claimed a 66-48 victory over Chicago State tonight at the Kress Events Center. With the win, the Phoenix hiked their season record to 3-0, while the Cougars dropped to 1-2 on the young season.
Green Bay opened the game with an 11-0 run in the first four minutes with four points coming from senior Kati Harty before junior Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) put Chicago State on the board at the 15:35 mark by hitting three free throws. Waldon's free throws sparked a 12-5 run which lasted six minutes brought the visitors to within 16-12 after a jumper from senior Jasmin Dixon (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) at 9:42. The home team later scored 17 of the next 25 points in eight-plus minutes to increase its advantage to 33-20 on a three from Harty at the 1:40 mark. Dixon kept CSU alive with a personal 5-0 run which sliced its deficit to 33-25 with 42 seconds left in the stanza, but senior Lavesa Glover nailed a jumper with 30 seconds left that gave the Phoenix a 35-25 halftime lead.
Dixon tallied the first four points of the second half in a two-plus minute stretch to bring the Cougars within six (35-29) at the 17:43 mark. A jumper by sophomore Heather Golden opened a 24-9 run over 11 minutes for Green Bay as it increased its leading margin to 59-38 with 5:42 left in the game after freshman Julie Wojta drained a three-pointer. The Phoenix took their biggest lead of the game at 63-42 with 2:06 remaining after freshman Lory Shaw hit a pair of free throws, but CSU tallied six of the final nine points in the final minutes to end the contest.
Dixon led all scorers with 26 points and went 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Sophomore Elana Wroten (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) (Chicago, Ill.) equaled a career high with nine rebounds and added eight points, while junior Nicole Clark (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) (West Bloomfield, Mich.) tied Wroten for game high rebounding honors with nine caroms. Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) notched six points and a game-leading four steals.
Harty paced Green Bay with 13 points and a game-high four assists, while Golden contributed 11 points and Glover added 10 points with two blocked shots.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday as they host Loyola at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with a start time of 2 p.m.
