Cougars Open Final Road Swing with 6-1 Win at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. – Chicago State men's tennis opened its final road regular-season road swing of the 2016 season here this afternoon by posting a dominant 7-0 victory over host Western Illinois at the WIU Tennis Facility.
 
After the Fighting Leathernecks won by default at No. 3 doubles, the Green and White responded with wins in the final two doubles flights to gain a 1-0 lead.
 
Freshman Gabriel Niculescu (Bucharest, Romania) and sophomore Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) posted a 6-2 win over Nikola Pavlovic and Nolan Jones at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) claimed a 6-1 victory in the No. 2 flight over Surya Sawhey and Ross Smith.
 
CSU (3-20) claimed all five singles matches played for the win after a WIU default win at No. 6 singles had evened the match at 1-1.
 
Wattley did not lose a game No. 3 as he posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sawhey then Savard defeated Pavlovic in the No. 1 flight, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Sophomore Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) then followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win of his own over Smith in the No. 5 contest, while Niculescu earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Jacob Sanders, and Gonzalez knocked off Jones at No. 4 via scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
 
The Cougars travel to Iowa City, Iowa for their regular season finale on Sunday evening at 67th-ranked Iowa beginning at 5 p.m.
