HOMEWOOD, Ill. – Chicago State men's tennis fell in a non-conference home match to South Dakota State 7-0 on Monday (April 1) afternoon at the HF Racquet Club. The Cougars couldn't get on the board in singles play following a hard fought doubles competition.
The Jackrabbits won at No. 3 doubles before Chicago State sophomores
Sergiu Muresan (Roman, Romania/) and
Mario Noboa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador/) bested Andrea Boglic and Parker Lawley at No. 1 doubles 8-4 to even it up. However the doubles point went to the Jackrabbits when Mateus Moreira and James Thorp topped sophomore
Julian Chavez (Bogota, Colombia/) and freshman
Jean Paul Jones (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Cruz del Sur) 8-5.
Chicago State won the opening sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles before losing both matches. At No. 1 sophomore Muresan was upended by Boglic 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. Noboa fell at No. 2 to Moreira 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
“I hate to see us work so hard and not come up with the big point we need to win matches,” Chicago State head coach
Jack Barton said. “We have to take accountability for making sure we do the things we need to do to have the best chance to win. It starts at practice all the way to the day of the match. It's frustrating but we have to keep pushing. We won't give up.”
South Dakota State improves to 7-10 while Chicago State falls to 1-17. The Cougars play at Marquette on Saturday (April 6) at 6 p.m.
