CHICAGO – Despite 12 kills from senior
Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC), Chicago State volleyball lost to NJIT 25-22, 25-13, 25-18 in a Great West Conference volleyball match on Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
Van Munster finished with a .478 (12-1-23) hitting line. She also added three block assists.
“We did a real good job of establishing the middles,” head coach Bob Eskew said. “Our middles played great today."
The Cougars totaled seven aces. Junior
Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo/Martin Methodist College) recorded three of them. Sophomore
Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) had a pair of aces to her name.
The opening set was close, with the Cougars grabbing a late 19-18 advantage thanks to a four consecutive points. The Highlanders didn't blink though, as they took control of the set with a 3-0 run of their own. Danica Vukotic, who would finish with a match-high 14 kills, had a pair of kills in the three-point push.
Following a second fame controlled by NJIT, the third featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. The Cougars had a three scoring runs of three or more. However NJIT did one better, with four runs of multiple points. The last, a 6-0 run late in the frame, put the match away for the Highlanders.
The Cougars fall to 2-17 on the season and 0-2 in the GWC. NJIT improves to 8-12 (1-2 GWC). The Cougars return to the court on Sunday with a non-conference home match with IUPUI. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
