DEKALB, Ill. – Chicago State volleyball closed out the first day of the 2010 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-6, 25-15) loss to the College of Charleston in a battle of the Cougars at the NIU Invitational, held at Victor E. Court on the campus of Northern Illinois. CSU saw its record drop to 0-2 on the young season while Charleston improved to 2-0.
CSU broke an early tie at 5-5 in the first set by scoring four of the next five points to gain a 9-6 lead following a Charleston attack error. After a kill by freshman Anna Morgan (South Range, WI/Maple-Northwestern) (South Range, Wis.) gave the Green and White a 10-8 lead, Charleston went on a 10-4 scoring run with three kills from sophomore Kerstin Koehler to post an 18-14 leading margin. CSU scored three straight points to cut its deficit to 18-17 that closed with a kill by sophomore Rashonda Woods (Chicago, IL/Simeon) (Chicago, Ill.), but Charleston tallied seven of the set's final eight points to gain a 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, Charleston jumped out to a commanding 10-2 lead on a kill from Koehler and posted a 15-4 run to head into intermission with a two-set advantage. Charleston outscored CSU by a 15-4 margin during the third set that turned a slim 5-4 lead into a 20-8 lead en route to the match win.
Junior Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.) and senior Emem Obot (Calumet City, IL/South Suburban College) (Calumet City, Ill.) each recorded four kills and two blocks to lead Chicago State. Senior Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) contributed nine assists and freshman Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev.) posted seven digs.
Madelyn McGinniss recorded top match honors of 11 kills, 11 digs and three blocks for Charleston. Kallie McKown dished a match-best 31 assists, while Emily Shelton produced 10 digs and a match-best three service aces.
CSU closes out the NIU Invitational tomorrow with a pair of matches against South Dakota at 10 a.m., followed by a 5 p.m. contest versus Oakland.
