Men’s Cross Country Places Fifth at UIC Season Opener

Senior Arturs Bareikis recorded a ninth-place finish at the UIC Opener with a time of 21:51.8.

CHICAGO – Chicago State men's cross country began its 2009 schedule over Labor Day Weekend and on a good note as it captured a fifth-place finish at the 2009 UIC Season Opener at Horsetail Lake in Palos Hills, Ill. Other teams competing in the meet with the Cougars and the host Flames were Milwaukee, Green Bay and Saint Xavier.

 

Making the most of his CSU debut was senior harrier Arturs Bareikis (Oak Forest, IL/Robert Morris (Ill.) University) (Oak Forest, Ill.) as he captured ninth place in the individual standings by posting a personal-best record time of 22:51.8 over the four-mile course.

 

Senior Anthony Davis (Gurnee, IL/North Park University) (Gurnee, Ill.) finished 30th in the race at a time of 25:31.0 followed by senior Joseph Leyendecker (Richton Park, IL/Rich South) (Richton Park, Ill.), who ran for a time of 25:37.7 to finish 31st overall. Both times also set personal-best records on the course for Davis and Leyendecker.

 

Also competing in the race were sophomore Uri Kuyoro (Harvey, Ill.), who finished 34th with a time of 30:12.6, junior Daniel Fleming (South Holland, IL/Thornwood HS) (South Holland, Ill.) with a 35th-place showing following a time of 32:51.1, and senior Joshua Campbell (Cartersville, Ga.), who placed 36th with a time of 34:35.6.

 

The Cougars return to action this Saturday as they head to DeKalb, Ill., to compete in the Northern Illinois Huskie Open beginning at 12:15 p.m.
