The Cougars dropped a pair of games Saturday at Eastern Kentucky to close the 2009 season

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball concluded its 2009 campaign with a pair of losses to host Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon by scores of 15-0 and 10-1 at Turkey Hughes Field in Richmond, Ky.

EKU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one thanks to an RBI single from sophomore Jayson Langfels that scored senior Tyler Rehmel, who led off the contest with a double, from second base. The Colonels increased their lead to 7-0 with a six-run second inning that included a two-run home run from Langfels and a two-RBI single from senior Aaron Barrows.

In the fifth inning, freshman Richie Rodriguez lined a run-scoring double down the right field line to plate sophomore Ryan Faidley, who opened the inning with a double in the same spot two plays earlier to hike the home team's advantage to 8-0. Rodriguez posted his second two-RBI double of the game in the sixth inning and later scored on a wild pitch to close the scoring.

EKU was led offensively by Rodriguez, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and scored twice, while Rehmel also hit 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore Paul Duncan (6-5) threw a no-hitter for the Colonels in addition to striking out eight and walking two.

Freshman James Tucker (Gary, IN/Calumet) (Gary, Ind.) saw his season record fall to 1-11 after allowing seven runs (one earned) on nine hits in four innings pitches and he recorded two strikeouts.

The Colonels started the second contest with a pair of runs in the first inning to capture a 2-0 leading margin. Barrows recorded an RBI triple to center field that scored senior Matt Davis, who singled to lead off the inning, before later scoring on a run-scoring single by Langfels.

Barrows recorded a two-run single and Langfels tallied a two-RBI double as part of a five-run second inning in helping EKU increase its advantage to 7-0. A two-run single by freshman A.J. Jamison to center field brought the home team's leading margin to 9-0 in the fifth inning.

Freshman Jacob Daniel hit a one-out triple down the left field line and scored on an RBI infield groundout by freshman Alan Abreu to hike the Colonels' advantage to 10-0 after the sixth inning.

CSU got on the board in the seventh inning when sophomore Michael Carpen (Whiting, IN/Clark) (Whiting, Ind.) connected on a leadoff single to left field and scored two plays later on senior Matt Haug (Plymouth, IN/Ancilla CC)'s (Plymouth, Ind.) RBI single to center field for the final margin.

EKU had four players record two hits for the game, led by Barrows with a 2-for-3 day to go along with three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Matt Fyffe (4-4) allowed only one hit and struck out six batters in six innings of work to earn the victory on the mound for the Colonels.

Carpen and Haug recorded a hit along with freshman William Hill (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) (Wheaton, Ill.) for the Cougars on the offensive end. Redshirt freshman Albert Carpen (Whiting, IN/Clark) (Whiting, Ind.) dropped to 0-6 on the year after giving up seven runs on eight hits in three innings, while adding two walks and a strikeout.
