CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's cross country opened the championship portion of its season on Oct. 31 as it competed in the second-annual Great West Conference Championship meet at famed Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
CSU finished eighth in the meet and were led by its two top runners – senior Arturs Bareikis (Oak Forest, IL/Robert Morris (Ill.) University) (Oak Forest, Ill.) and freshman Matthew Jordan (Suffield, OH/Field) (Mogadore, Ohio) – in the individual 8K race.
Bareikis finished with a time of 28:19.91 to place 37th in the meet, while Jordan crossed the finish line at 28:31.30.
Other Cougars that competed in the meet were senior Joseph Leyendecker (Richton Park, IL/Rich South) (52nd), sophomore Uri Kuyoro (53rd), senior Anthony Davis (Gurnee, IL/North Park University) (54th) and freshman Luc Faron (55th).
“I am very pleased with how our guys ran,” said CSU second-year head coach Wayne Holloway. “The effort was there and I am proud of all of them.”
Utah Valley won its team championship after scoring 21 points, while NJIT's Christian Baumbach ran for a time of 25:57.95 to capture the individual title.
The Cougars return to action on Nov. 14 with the NCAA Midwest Region Championships in Springfield, Mo.
