CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball scored 50 second-half points to come back from a 14-point halftime deficit en route to defeating visiting St. Francis (Ill.) by a score of 73-66 in its home opener Wednesday night at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center. The Cougars improved their record to 2-3 and the Fighting Saints fell to 3-6 on the year.
Junior Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) led three CSU players in double figures with a season-best 17 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Jael Peña (Harlem, N.Y.) added 13 points and a game-high seven assists, while senior Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) tallied 10 points. Senior Laureen Pierson (Dayton, OH/Northmont) (Dayton, Ohio) recorded nine points and seven boards for the Cougars.
USF was paced by senior Jacqie Storm's game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field that included 7-of-12 from three-point range. Senior Anna Sears contributed 11 points, while sophomore Kaci Baird added 10 points and six rebounds.
Up next for the Cougars is a home contest at the Jones Convocation Center against Dayton this Saturday afternoon with the tip-off set for 2 p.m.
