KENT, Ohio (Sept. 20, 2008) – Chicago State volleyball concluded the 2008 Kent State/Mizuno Open Saturday with two losses at KSU's M.A.C. Center. The Cougars (0-15) suffered a 3-0 loss to the host Golden Flashes (25-15, 25-6, 25-13) in the first match of the day before falling in three sets (25-11, 25-18, 25-17) to Duquesne (10-4) in their tournament finale.
Kent State was led in the first match by sophomore Lauren Jones' 10 kills. Briane Willie added six kills, while sophomore Celia Sabo produced a match-best seven blocks and four kills. Freshman Lauren Simon tallied 12 assists, junior Katie Veatch notched 11 assists, sophomore Kristen Barr had 10 digs and junior Lindsay Daniels recorded four service aces for the Golden Flashes.
Sophomore Hope Lockett (St. Paul, MN/Central) (St. Paul, Minn.) tallied six kills to lead Chicago State and while sophomore Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) notched a match-high 16 assists. Redshirt junior Shamara Clark (Bloomington, IN/South) (Bloomington, Ind.) contributed four kills and junior Jean Keenan (/) (Braidwood, Ill.) recorded three kills, while junior Chy Crichton (The Dalles, OR/Mt. Hood CC) (The Dalles, Ore.) added nine digs.
Freshman Tricia Mullen led Duquesne in the second contest of the day with 13 kills, while freshman Sarah Svornic produced 24 assists. Freshman Brittany Poling notched six kills, freshman Liz Holman recorded five kills and three blocks, and sophomore Amy Palko posted 11 digs for the Dukes.
The Cougars were led by Minta and freshman Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.). Minta posted seven assists, six digs and three kills, while Maziveyi also contributed three kills and added a season-high three service aces. Crichton also recorded seven assists and seven digs, and Keenan posted seven digs.
For her efforts this weekend, Minta earned All-Tournament team accolades.
Chicago State returns to the Jacoby Dickens Center Tuesday evening to open a season-best four-match homestand as it faces Indiana State with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
