CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's basketball has learned that it will kick off this week's inaugural Great West Conference Tournament in Orem, Utah as the seventh seed with a quarterfinal contest Wednesday evening against second-seeded Houston Baptist, the conference announced Sunday night.
The Cougars and the Huskies will tip-off at 6 p.m., central time, from the UVU Events Center. HBU posted a season sweep of CSU during the regular season with a 66-56 win in Houston on Jan. 14 and a thrilling 85-83 overtime contest on Feb. 4 in Chicago.
CSU closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon with an 81-75 win over NJIT at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center to finish its conference slate with a 4-8 record to tie with the Highlanders and Texas-Pan American for fifth place. A tiebreaker was used to determine the final seeds.
Wednesday's quarterfinal round will also feature host Utah Valley, the fourth seed, taking on UTPA at 3:30 p.m., and third-seeded North Dakota facing sixth-seeded NJIT at 8:30 p.m.
Regular-season champion South Dakota earned a first-round bye in the tournament with a Friday evening showdown against Utah Valley or UTPA on the horizon beginning at 6 p.m.
