CHICAGO – The Chicago State women’s basketball recognized for their accomplishments during the regular season as four players were captured All-Great West Conference honors on Wednesday afternoon, the conference announced in a press release.
Junior forward Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, Wis.) was picked to the All-GWC First Team to become the first CSU player to earn all-conference first team honors since Krisey Sanders received the same honor from the Mid-Continent Conference in 2002-03. Waldon is averaging 14.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game to lead the Cougars in addition to ranking nationally in three-point percentage (44.1) and made three-pointers per game (2.8) which also leads the league. Waldon recorded a career-best 24 points against NJIT on March 6, tied a career-high 12 rebounds on two occasions and dished out a career-high seven assists against North Carolina A&T on Nov. 20.
Capturing Honorable Mention recognition from the conference were junior forward Tressa Beckel (Waseca, Minn.), sophomore guard/forward Natalie Marlowe (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior guard Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, Wis.). Beckel was also named to the conference’s All-Newcomer Team.
Beckel currently averages 6.6 points and three rebounds per game and has provided a spark off the bench for CSU this season. The newcomer tallied career highs of 20 points and nine rebounds in the Cougars’ season finale against NJIT on March 6, and twice recorded 18 points in consecutive games against Houston Baptist (Feb. 4) and Texas-Pan American (Feb. 6).
Marlowe, who is averaging 5.5 points, four rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, recorded six double-figure scoring games this season and leads the GWC in three-point percentage for conference games. The second-year starter produced her first collegiate double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds at Houston Baptist on Jan. 14 in addition to recording a career-best seven assists against Valparaiso on Dec. 2.
Alyssa Waldon recorded team-leading averages of 3.4 assists and 2.7 steals per game while posting a scoring average of 10.8 points a game. The four-year letterwinner posted double figure scoring efforts in 18 games that included a season-high 24 points on Dec. 5 versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Air Force Classic. She also grabbed a career-best eight rebounds and dished out a new career high of nine assists versus Valparaiso on Dec. 2.
The Cougars will begin Great West Tournament play on Thursday evening against host Utah Valley at the UVU Events Center with a start time of 8:30 p.m., Central Time.
