CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball was honored by the Great West Conference on Tuesday as three of its players captured all-conference accolades, the conference announced in a press release.
Junior forward Carl Montgomery (Chicago, IL/Shepard) (Chicago, Ill.) and junior guard Christian Wall (New Orleans, LA/John Ehret) (New Orleans, La.) garnered second team all-conference accolades as they led the Cougars in several categories during the season. Wall and Montgomery mark the first CSU all-conference honorees since Royce Parran earned All Mid-Continent Conference Second Team honors in 2005-06.
Montgomery is averaging a team-best 13.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game in addition to ranking second in the conference in rebounding prior to today's GWC Tournament quarterfinal game against Houston Baptist. He also recorded nine double-doubles on the season, including five against conference opponents. The third-year starter also became the seventh member of CSU's 1,000-point club on Jan. 19 at Eastern Kentucky.
Wall led CSU with 3.0 assists and 1.9 steals per contest in addition to averaging 12.8 points a game heading into the tournament. He tied a pair of career highs with 23 points against Northern Illinois on Jan. 6 and seven rebounds at Iowa State on Nov. 16.
Also receiving all-conference honors was junior guard/forward Antonio Lofton (Chicago, IL/Parkland College) (Chicago, Ill.) as he claimed all-newcomer and honorable mention recognition. The junior college transfer is averaging 9.1 points and three rebounds per game during his first season at CSU that included posting 14 double figure scoring contests. Lofton twice posted a season-best 18 points in GWC games against Houston Baptist, while recording a season-high seven rebounds in road games against Eastern Michigan (Jan. 3) and South Dakota (Feb. 11).
