CHICAGO (Jan. 26, 2010) – Chicago State men’s track & field opened its 2010 season on a good note on Jan. 23 at the annual Eastern Illinois Mega Meet, held at EIU’s Lantz Fieldhouse in Charleston, Ill. The Cougars produced 10 top-ten finishes and five personal record times during the meet.
In his first-ever collegiate track meet, freshman Matthew Jordan (Mogadore, Ohio) earned two top-ten finishes in the distance events with PR times. Jordan finished ninth in the mile run with a time of 4:43.95 and later placed 10th in the 3,000-meter run at a time of 9:38.38.
Senior Arturs Bareikis (Oak Forest, Ill.) set a personal-best time of 4:43.11 in the mile for a eighth-place finish, while junior Earnest Jones (Melrose Park, Ill.) recorded a sixth-place showing in the 600-meter run with a PR time of 1:23.78. Senior Anthony Davis (Gurnee, Ill.) finished eighth in the 1,000-meter run at a time of 3:04.86 followed by senior Joseph Leyendecker (Richton Park, Ill.) in ninth place at 3:10.19 and sophomore Joe Hill (Chicago, Ill.) in 10th place with a time of 3:12.19
Sophomore Jonathan Majors (Richton Park, Ill.) posted a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 7.03 and junior Jamal Ephraim (Hazel Crest, Ill.) placed 10th in the event with a personal-best time of 7.16. Junior Daniel Fleming (South Holland, Ill.) captured fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 22-5.25.
Majors and Jones later teamed with newcomer Bryant Harvey (Georgianna, Ala.) and sophomore Uri Kuyoro (Harvey, Ill.) to finish sixth in the 4x400-meter relay at a time of 3:32.15.
“I am very pleased with the way we came out and competed in our first meet,” stated Holloway. “We have a long way to go, but this is a good start.”
CSU is back in action this Saturday with the University of Chicago Duals beginning at 9 a.m.
