Eighteen Chicago State Student-Athletes Capture Winter/Spring Academic All-Great West Conference Honors

Winter/Spring Academic All-Great West Conference Release

CHICAGO –
Chicago State University athletics were recognized for its commitment to academic excellence as 18 student-athletes in seven sports earned Winter/Spring Academic All-Great West Conference accolades, the conference announced in a press release on June 12.

 

Among the honorees for CSU were seniors Bonita Jones (Sacramento, Calif.) and Fiona Wan (Richmond, B.C.), who were recognized by the Great West as two of 11 student-athletes from conference-affiliated schools to have maintained a 4.0 grade-point-average during their collegiate careers.

 

Jones is one of seven Cougars to earn double academic all-conference honors during the 2008-09 school year as the CSU men’s and women’s track & field teams each fielded three honorees for indoor and outdoor track.

 

The CSU baseball team produced the most Academic All-Great West winter/spring selections within the athletic department with five.

Tiffany Brown (Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Sr., Chicago, Ill.)

Biology/Chemistry major… cumulative GPA – 3.80… 2009 CSU President’s Cup winner... graduated in May with Magna Cum Laude honors… CSU University Honor Roll… CSU Presidential Scholar

Bonita Jones (Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Sr., Sacramento, Calif.)

Psychology major… cumulative GPA – 4.00… member of the CSU 4x100-meter relay team that placed fourth at the Great West outdoor championships… graduated in May with Summa Cum Laude… CSU University Honor Roll… CSU Presidential Scholar

Jean Keenan (Women’s Indoor Track & Field, Jr., Braidwood, Ill.)

Mathematics major… cumulative GPA – 3.42… earned Fall Academic All-Great West Conference honors in volleyball

Lauren Thompson (Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Jr., Chicago, Ill.)

Nursing major… cumulative GPA – 3.27

Anthony Davis (Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Jr., Chicago, Ill.)

Communications major… cumulative GPA – 3.39… earned Fall Academic All-Great West Conference honors in men’s cross country

Joseph Leyendecker (Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Jr., Richton Park, Ill.)

History/Secondary Education major… cumulative GPA – 3.59… earned Fall Academic All-Great West Conference honors in men’s cross country… CSU Presidential Scholar

 

Xavier Williams (Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Jr., Chicago, Ill.)

Marketing major… cumulative GPA – 3.42

Albert Carpen (Baseball, R-Fr., Whiting, Ind.)

Physical Education major… cumulative GPA – 3.42… started 39 games and finished with a .229 batting average… tied for the team lead with seven stolen bases and finished second in putouts with 100… hit .229 on the year with 10 runs batted in

Matt Haug (Baseball, Sr., Plymouth, Ind.)

Physical Education major… cumulative GPA – 3.54… played in 40 games and started 39 times… posted a team-best 187 putouts and 22 RBI while hitting .223 for the season… team captain… Academic All-Independent honoree

Kellon McFarlin (Baseball, Sr., Chicago, Ill.)

Communications major… cumulative GPA – 3.50… appeared in 34 contests while starting 28 of them… posted a .225 batting average with seven stolen bases, six RBI and two doubles… two-time Academic All-Independent selection… CSU University Honor Roll… CSU Presidential Scholar

Preston Pires (Baseball, Sr., Kalani, Hawai’i)

Physical Education major… cumulative GPA – 3.44… played in 34 games with 30 starting assignments at catcher/designated hitter… hit .242 to go along with 12 RBI and seven doubles… two-time Academic All-Independent honoree

Michael Storrs (Baseball, Jr., Palos Heights, Ill.)

Business/Finance major… cumulative GPA – 3.30… CSU Presidential Scholar

Stefanie Kohr (Women’s Golf, Sr., Trier, Germany)

Accounting major… cumulative GPA – 3.47… recorded an average of 87.2 over nine rounds… carded a 78 in the first round of the Butler Fall Invitational

Fiona Wan (Women’s Golf, Sr., Richmond, B.C.)

Criminal Justice major… cumulative GPA – 4.00… tallied an 86 scoring average over 20 rounds of golf… posted a low round of 80 in the second day at the Butler Fall Invitational… graduated in May with Summa Cum Laude honors… University Honor Roll… CSU Presidential Scholar… CSU Outstanding Senior Scholar Award recipient

Yosefin Eliza (Women’s Tennis, Sr., Jakarta, Indonesia)

Art Design major… cumulative GPA – 3.57… finished with a 9-5 singles record and an 8-2 doubles record in dual matches… produced an 8-2 mark at No. 2 singles… earned All-Tournament team honors after helping the Cougars capture the Independent Tournament title in April

Peggy Moore (Women’s Tennis, So., Toledo, Ohio)

Management major… cumulative GPA – 3.20… tallied an 8-4 doubles record and a 5-8 singles ledger in dual matches… produced a 3-1 dual match record at No. 6 singles

Golda Rubina (Women’s Tennis, Jr., Jakarta, Indonesia)

Art Studies major… cumulative GPA – 3.37… recorded a perfect 17-0 mark in doubles and a team-best 14-1 singles record  in dual matches… tallied an 8-0 record at No. 4 singles and a 4-0 record at No. 5 singles

Nemanja Stankovic (Men’s Basketball, So., Toronto, Ontario)

Undecided on a major… cumulative GPA – 3.63…played in 25 games with three starting assignments… averaged 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game… tied a career high with seven points in consecutive games against Eastern Illinois and Campbell… posted a career-best five rebounds versus Detroit

Jasmin Dixon (Women’s Basketball, Sr., Detroit, Mich.)

Business Management major… cumulative GPA – 3.45… led the team in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounds (6.2 rpg), assists (3.9 apg), steals (2.4 spg) and blocked shots (0.9 bpg)… scored in double figures for 23 games, including a season-best 26 points at Green Bay… two-time First Team All-Independent honoree

Courtney Waldon (Women’s Basketball, So., Sun Prairie, Wis.)

Communications major… cumulative GPA – 3.61… started all 29 games while averaging 10.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest…ranked 17th in the nation for three-point shooting percentage (36.5)… scored a season-high 23 points at Texas-Pan American and added 22 points against NJIT… Honorable Mention All-Independent selection… member of the CSU Epsilon Beta Sophomore Honor Society
